History
In 1916, the State of California instituted legislation enabling counties to create free public libraries. To provide efficient and effective library service to the county's growing population, the Napa County Library needed more space than the combined Goodman and County Free Library buildings. With federal and local grants, Library funds, and fundraising by the Friends of the Library, a site was acquired in downtown Napa and, in 1974, a new Main Library was built. This building was expanded in the mid-1990s, remodeled in 2010 and 2017 and continues to serve as the Main Library for the Napa County Library system - Napa, American Canyon, Yountville and Calistoga.
