Welcome to Mount Shasta Union School District, a small rural K-8 district, located at the foot of majestic Mt. Shasta in northern California. I'm honored and privileged to be the Superintendent of this unique community in partnership with the Weed Union Elementary School District providing administrative and business services. Mount Shasta and Weed are beautiful communities surrounded by lakes, forests and mountains. Employment consists largely of tourism, recreation, cottage industries, forest service, community college, hospital and medical services, bottling plant, and Union Pacific Railroad. Both districts serve a combined population of approximately 1000 students with three elementary schools: K-3 Mount Shasta Elementary, a 2008 California Distinguished School, 4-8 Sisson Elementary, and K-8 Weed Elementary. Alternative education programs include independent study and community day schools. The districts are committed to the following aims: Staff members of each district are working to create a collaborative culture of teamwork to improve student learning for all students of various socioeconomic and ethic backgrounds focused on the California content standards. With California's economy continuing to deteriorate and the failure of the May 19th Special Election propositions, both school districts will be forced to make a second round of cuts in addition to the cuts already made last February with the adoption of the 2009-2010 State Budget. Basically those cuts represent less teaching staff and higher class sizes. The next round of cuts will affect assortment of personnel, programs and services. Specific information regarding these cuts will be made available at the June 22nd and 23rd Board meetings. For further information one may contact the Superintendent, Gary Lampella, at 926-6007.
