History

Founded by St. Junipero Serra of the Franciscan Order, Mission Santa Clara is the 8th in the chain of 21 historic Alta California Missions. Mission Santa Clara was later given to the Jesuit Order and became Santa Clara College in 1851, and the first institution of higher learning in the State of California. As of today, Mission Santa Clara is now the student chapel for Santa Clara University.
