History
The Mission Beach Women's Club was organized on November 4, 1926 when 10 women, mostly Navy wives, gathered together by our founder, Mrs. Olive Van Dorsten, to form a club devoted to the ideals of community service. At first, members met at each other's homes. The club in 1939 purchased, from the Mission Beach Business and Boosters Club, the building known as Shirley Cottage, built in 1918 and now our Club's historic venue. During the early years, members took an active interest in helping start-up businesses like the Catamaran and the Bahia Hotel. An interesting note is that the club planted the original palms along Bayside Walk and established city trash pickups in the bayside area.
