Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions opened in 1978. A small group of artists was looking for a spacious, inexpensive place to house its growing bodies of work and realized there were likely many local artists in need of the same. Today LACE has more than 3,000 events under its belt. More than 5,000 artists have come through here, including those who went on to garner notoriety such as Barbara Kruger, Tony Oursler and John Baldessari. All types of of pieces appear here, including video and digital works, performance art, installations and much more. LACE is a nonprofit organization, and placement in the gallery is normally free or inexpensive.
