Formed in 1866, the Kern County Sheriff's Office is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in Kern County, Calif. It provides police services to the unincorporated portions of the county. The office also undertakes the responsibility of search and rescue, jail operations, providing bailiffs and prisoner transportation to courts. In addition, it serves civil processes, maintains lawsuit papers and provides coroner services. The Kern County Sheriff's Office employs a staff of more than 1,050 full- and part-time sworn officers, civilians and community volunteers. Located in Bakersfield, Calif., the sheriff's office maintains field operations, detention, patrol, investigation and administrative service divisions.
