Jessie Baker School serves young people with special needs, aged 3 to 22. Originally built as California's first public school for students with Down syndrome, the school now educates children with mild autism and other conditions. Yearly fundraising events are strongly supported by the local community and have helped the school build computer labs, a heated swimming pool and an indoor track for therapeutic horseback riding lessons. Teachers at Jessie Baker say they believe it's important to set high expectations for special-needs kids while providing them with a safe environment. The school also emphasizes life skills and vocational training.
