This location opened in October 1983 and was, at that time, the third Hole in the Wall, preceeded by Crescent City and Brookings but for us, Bob and Fran, the owners, it was our sixth shop. At that time, in Arcata, there was a very limited number of places that sold sandwiches. Before we purchased the building, it was Holy Mackerel Fish Company and what is now a bench used to be a crab cooker. Our menu was not nearly as extensive as it is now and we didn't have such a large variety of rolls. If I remember correctly, the basic sandwich was $2.25. Those were the good old days. We couldn't afford to advertise so the day before we opened we printed menus and went out at night and put them on the door knobs of every business and house and on the windshield of every car until we ran out.
