History
Jay Levin, the Founder of Follow the Child, had a science teacher for a father. Each summer they loaded up their Datsun complete with their Dalmation Buttons, and made their way to every state and national park they could. When they passed road-cuts, his father took pictures so his children in class could see the layers of the earth. When they hiked the mountains of Wyoming, they collected sea shells in the rock records that proved there had once been inland oceans. Follow the Child was born from the idea that students needed to go outside to discover the world. Children are natural scientists, and when allowed to explore the world...the best classroom ever invented...they learn more in a day than they do in a month in a traditional classroom. Jay developed his lessons to give children the freedom to explore as well as ask questions when their curiosity was piqued. It is the winning formula, and one that Jay learned about when studying Maria Montessori's techniques.
