Edison Language Academy is a bilingual magnet school that is one of only 10 dual-immersion K - 12 programs in the United States. Like other public schools, Edison abides by California curriculum standards, but it is distinct in that children learn to speak, read and write in English and Spanish simultaneously. Parents do not have to be proficient in Spanish in order to enroll their children in the school. From 2006 through 2008, the California Department of Education endowed Edison with the Title One Academic Achievement Award. The honor is given to schools that exceed academic growth targets for students of all groups in a substantial way. The Academy also provides an immersion track in conjunction with two other Santa Monica schools: John Adams Middle School and Santa Monica High School. Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms are equipped with SMARTboards, and the computer lab features that technology as well. In addition to the main computer lab, Edison has two mobile computer labs. Extracurricular programs include Ballet Folklorico; Child Care, Recreation, Enrichment, Sports Together (CREST); Choral Music Program; Gardening Angels; Gifted and Talented Education (GATE); Homework Buddies; Instrumental Music Program; Movie Night; Playground Access; Sports; Summer Adventure; Summer Enrichment Program; Summer Reading; Theater Arts Program; and the Young Storytellers Program. Edison also offers English as a Second Language courses for adults. Its El Nido Counseling Center employs a full-time counselor (funded by the City of Santa Monica) and additional interns who provide free services to families and children. Its Edison Language Academy Video was narrated by actor Sidney Poitier.
