The Day Worker Center of Mountain View is a 501 ( c ) 3 non-profit organization serving the day laborer community in Mountain View, Los Altos, and other surrounding communities. The Center was established in 1996 1996 by local business people, community leaders, and church leaders to provide job-matching services for hundreds of local homeowners and businesses annually. The Center is led by a full-time Executive Director, Mar a Marroqu n, who has received numerous awards for her work at the Center. Organizational guidance comes from a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders and includes representation from the day laborer community. In addition, much of the day-to-day worker-related activities at the Center are managed by the Workers' Commission, comprised of 8-10 current and past users of the Center. In October 2006, the Center celebrated its 10th anniversary of service to the community with a weekend of events, including an original theatrical performance, a city-wide art contest, a soccer tournament, food booths, and live musical performances, and an award from State Assemblywoman Sally Lieber. In addition to supporting the day laborer community, the Center contributes to the community in the following ways: reduces the number of calls to Police Departments of nuisance complaints in the areas where workers congregate
