Davis Street Family Resource Center is a long-standing community resource for families in San Leandro and the surrounding areas. Originally founded as a ministry of the First Christian Church in 1970, Davis Street became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1990. The center has evolved from a thrift store, food pantry and childcare center to a multi-service agency offering family and youth counseling, free medical care, family support services and childcare, at four locations.
Davis Street's Child Development Centers, which collectively provides care for 350 children, aged 2 years, 9 months through fifth grade, are located at three elementary schools in the San Leandro School District: Garfield, Roosevelt and Jefferson. The fourth center, the Davis Street Children's Center, is licensed to care for up to 60 children aged 2 years, 9 months until kindergarten entry. This center is located at 1190 Davis St.
Other services provided through the Davis Street Family Resource Center include parenting classes, mentoring programs, mental health services and job training and placement assistance. There's also an on-site computer lab.
With funding from the federal stimulus program, Davis Street launched its Mid-County Housing Resource Center, which provides monetary support and case management for low-income families at risk of losing their housing.
