History
The National Council of Jewish Women is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. NCJW's Los Angeles Section has been at the forefront of social change since 1909 by providing the community with programs and services. Today, NCJW/LA serves more than 15,000 individuals each year by providing over 100,000 hours of programs and services with the support of 500 volunteers. Council Thrift Shops was established in 1924 to respond to a need that was created by the waves of immigrants who had been displaced by WWI, many of whom settled in the LA area and were in desperate need of help. Now in operation for over 90 years, the mission is still the same: to provide affordable merchandise to those in need and to support the programs and services of NCJW/LA.
