Compton Junior High serves students in grades seven and eight. Its academic curriculum includes programs in English, music, mathematics, science and social science. The school has a library media center that houses more than 22,000 resources, including fiction and nonfiction books, encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, CD-ROMs, videotapes, laserdiscs, DVDs, books on tape and other reference books. It also offers an accelerated reader program, an incentive-based reading program where students choose books at their own reading level and then take quizzes to earn points. In addition, Compton Junior High offers The California Young Reader Medal, a state-wide program where students read selected books in various categories and vote on the one they like best. The school is located in Bakersfield, Calif., and is a part of the Bakersfield City School District.
