Named for William Coleman, who originally owned all the land in the area, Coleman Elementary is one of six K-5 elementary schools in the San Rafael City Schools District. In 2005, the school was newly constructed to replace an aging facility. The original Coleman Elementary was founded in 1910 and celebrated its 100th anniversary with educational festivities.
The neighborhood school, down the street from Dominican University, serves a diverse population and is active in the community. The school hosted an Earth Day celebration and conducts a fundraiser with Andy's Market in the fall. There are also monthly tours of the school for parents during the year.
