Windrush School closed after 35 years in June 2012. It was a K-8 private school located on expansive 4-acre grounds that once housed the Chung Mei Home, an orphanage for Chinese boys founded in 1923. Windrush was established in 1976. It described its orientation as progressive and sought to encourage love of learning, self-discovery, leaderhip, community service and respect for others, among other qualities. The historic building that housed Windrush's offices and elementary school features Chinese-influenced architectural elements, and, according to the school, the library/middle school building, completed in 2008, is one of only four school buildings in the nation to have a LEED Platinum rating. The school also had an art studio.
