The Redding Municipal Utilities Department in Redding, Calif., consists of five separate divisions: Water Utility, Wastewater Utility, Streets/Field Operations, Traffic Operations/Administration and Solid Waste/Recycling. A great many functions considered to be public works are incorporated and administered within the Redding Municipal Utilities Department. The department maintains more than 400 miles of city streets and storm drains; more than 310 miles of water lines with seven pumping plants and two treatment facilities; more than 370 miles of wastewater collection system and two treatment facilities; more than 60 traffic signals; and serves more than 28,000 commercial and residential solid waste accounts. The department is able to perform its broad range of functions by having a highly skilled staff of nearly 150 full-time members.
