Carl Hankey is a kindergarten through eighth grade school. The middle schoolers are separated from the elementary students. Carl Hankey offers an International Baccalaureate program which feeds into Capistrano Valley High School's IB program. Besides teaching the California standards, it also focuses on foreign language and technology. The program is self funded by parents and a grant from British Petroleum. The school mascot is the hawk. Carl Hankey, an orange rancher, was a school board member for many years and the unofficial weatherman in San Juan Capistrano.
