Dr. Brian Y. Kim is a board-certified UCI Health specialist in family and sports medicine. He provides multidisciplinary care for active individuals, with a particular focus on runners and female athletes. His clinical interests include metabolic bone health, overuse injuries, sports health and nutrition. He is currently a team physician for the UCI athletics program. Kim earned his medical degree at the UCI School of Medicine. He completed an internship and a residency in family medicine at UCLA, where received fellowship training in primary care sports medicine and conducted research on female athletes and bone stress injuries in collegiate runners. He also holds a master’s degree in nutrition science from Columbia University, with an emphasis in sports nutrition. His research interests include musculoskeletal medicine, bone stress injury, female athlete triad, a medical condition characterized by low energy levels, menstrual dysfunction and low bone density. He has worked extensively with athletes at all levels and in various sports, including track and field, volleyball, ski and snowboarding, tennis, soccer, swim, cycling, golf and gymnastics. He has also served as the primary physician on-site for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he provided integrative, collaborative and multidisciplinary care for Olympic-level athletes. Kim, who also speaks Spanish, believes that exercise is medicine. His goal is to encourage his patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
