History
Who Are We? We are African American men who are getting the word out about the needs of Back men with mental health and substance abuse issues. We do presentations that address topics such Post Traumatic Stress; Family Issues; Wellness and Recovery; Community Violence; Self Esteem; Spirituality and Mental Health; and African American History, often through personal stories: Where did we come from? Black Men Speaks began as a project of the African American Male Issues Committee of the Pool of Consumer Champions, a group of over 400 consumers in Alameda County, and now operates under PEERS, a consumer run organization in Alameda County. What are we doing now? We the members of Black Men Speak! Tell the story of what it is like to be an African American man with substance abuse and mental health issues living in an urban community. We do this by talking about our individual roads to recovery.
