Berns Company was founded by George Berns in 1955. George's son Steve Berns now in his late 40's, grew up in the industrial surplus business. Remaining in Long Beach, he attended University of Long Beach receiving a degree in business. Most of his business education has been attained on the job over the last 30 years The Berns Company.During the 1950's and 60's the business primarily bought and sold new surplus from the United States Government. In the late 60's, Berns Company purchased a gear manufacturing company and began manufacturing Drive Train Components for the material handling, construction, forestry and mining industries. Over the last 30 years, the company has grown to six warehouses and one of the the largest inventories of material handling replacement parts and components in the world. The Berns group of companies now employs 40 individuals. Berns Company has become a major wholesale supplier to Original Equipment Manufacturers such as Clark Material Handling, Nacco-Hyster-Yale and others.Today, Berns Company continues to be one of the largest material handling surplus buyers in the world. Depending on the customer needs, Berns Company can produce off the shelf parts or components or rebuild the customers. We see requirements primarily for forklifts and towing tractors. However, it is not uncommon to see components for cranes, loaders and heavy trucks.Service parts are the thrust of Berns Company's business. It makes up to 80% of all sales.
