Serving students in grades 9-12 on the eastern side of the island, Alameda High School came it at number 643 on Newsweek's 2010 ranking of high schools, a placement based on the number of advanced placement and other honors courses students take each year. The school was also honored as a California Distinguished School and a member of the US Department of Education's Blue Ribbon School Program. The campus encompasses a large square city block, with many trees, lawns, murals and benches. Alameda High competes in the Alameda-Contra Costa Athletic League, and is a regional power in several sports, including men's and boys and girls swimming, girls basketball, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country and track, boys water polo, men's and girls golf, softball and baseball.
