Arkansas Steel Association builds and rebuilds locomotives, including frames and parts not classified in any type or gauge, and railroad, street and rapid transit cars and car equipment for operation on rails for freight and passenger service. Arkansas Steel Association is upgrading its plant and equipment in an effort to handle the growing needs. Major expansions to the rolling mill were realized in 1999 when more than $20 million was invested to update equipment to the cutting edge of the steel making technology. New equipment included a 60-ton per hour reheat furnace, a 3,000-horsepower breakdown mill, walking beam, transfer tables and three vertical mills with associated conveyors and equipment. The company is headquarted in Newport, Ark.
