MERC (Maasai Environmental Resource) is a collective of Maasai community organizers and collaborators dedicated to protecting wildlife, promoting Maasai land rights, and preserving Maasai culture. Founded in 1987 by Meitamei Olol Dapash, MERC works towards the self-determination of Olosho le Maa and the stewardship of Maasailand.
MERC focuses on land justice and stewardship, ecology and coexistence, decolonizing knowledge, leadership, resilient futures, and Maasai-led tourism. They offer programs for university students, collaborate with various organizations, welcome researchers, and stand in solidarity with movements such as Black Lives Matter. MERC strives to protect the vulnerable Maasai community in Tanzania and restore justice while supporting the recovery and regeneration of the Mau Forest, a critical watershed in Maasailand.
