La Canasta Mexican Food Products, founded in 1962 by Richard & Carmen Abril, began its business as a tortilla factory that supplied fresh homemade tortillas to restaurants. By word of mouth, other Mexican Restaurants started requesting La Canasta Flour & Corn Tortillas. In 1974, Richard Abril passed away leaving Mrs. Abril and their seven children all under the age of 23 years old to carry on the business, which continued to prosper and grow prompting the expansion of the Manufacturing Facility in 1979. In 1976, La Canasta began shipping tortillas into the United States Midwest Region. By 1981, La Canasta Tortillas were well known in the Midwest Market, thus prompting another manufacturing expansion into the Minnesota Market. The enterprise continues as a publicly owned company. La Canasta Mexican Food Products, is currently supplying Flour Tortillas, Corn Tortillas, Chips, and Spices to restaurants and grocery stores in Phoenix and Tucson on a daily basis. La Canasta also owns My Nana s Brand, which distributes refrigerated and frozen products throughout the United States.
