Founded in 1964, Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency is based in Phoenix. The agency provides a statewide radiological health and safety program, and enforces state rules and regulations for controlling ionizing radiation. It has five program areas, including radioactive materials, X-rays, radiation measurement laboratory, emergency response, and the Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners. Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency licenses and inspects medical, industrial, and academic users of radioactive materials. The agency registers and inspects X-ray producing machines throughout the state of Arizona. It maintains surveillance on radiation levels around nuclear power generating stations, and tests radon levels throughout the state. Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency s emergency response program covers radiation accidents in the state, and provides training for police, fire and medical personnel. MRTBE examines and licenses professionals to practice various specialties of medical imaging and therapy using ionizing radiation. It also manages complaints against licensees, investigates allegations and adjudicates complaints.
