The Arizona Department of Public Safety works for the protection of life and property by deterring criminal activity. The department provides scientific, technical and operational support services for various criminal justice agencies. Founded in 1969, it has highway patrol, agency support and criminal justice support divisions. With several office locations in more than 15 counties in Arizona, the department offers specialized training programs related to hazardous materials response. It also oversees the issuance of school bus driver certifications and conducts inspections of school buses. Through its criminal investigation division, the department investigates cases related to narcotic trafficking, vehicle thefts, and computer and financial crimes. It maintains and operates a geographic information system mapping center, as well as conducts internal and external management audits, as well as provides facility management and logistical support services.
