History
The Black Bear has been around since the beginning of the boom in Denali. The central log cabin was originally commissioned by Lynn Castle and built by a handful of Denali men in the 70s, from locally harvested spruce. It was to serve as the first Denali museum. Then it was moved to the park strip and was the the Denali Air office for several years. The building was eventually loaded up and trucked to Glitter Gulch. Beth Barrett then started the Black Bear Coffee House in 1997, as one of the first businesses on the boardwalk, when that property was first being cultivated as the Denali Rainbow Village. Becki Klauss came in to the picture in 2002, and took over management in 2004. She took Beth's vision, added her touch and made it what it is today. Becki and her partner, Adam bought the Black Bear from Beth in the spring of 2010, and it continues to grow into the community melting pot of goodness that it is today.
