The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) is the largest statewide Native organization in Alaska, representing over 140,000 Native peoples, which is approximately one out of every five Alaskans. Established in 1966 to settle land claims, AFN continues to be the primary platform and voice for Alaska Natives in addressing critical public policy and government issues. They promote and advocate for programs and systems that instill pride and confidence in individual Alaska Natives, while fostering the preservation and growth of Alaska Native cultures.
With an annual Convention that draws around 6,000 attendees, the AFN Convention is the largest representative gathering of Native peoples in the United States. The proceedings are broadcast live statewide and webcast to 70 countries worldwide. AFN engages in ongoing dialogue with federal and state representatives and administration officials to advocate for fair and appropriate policies that recognize the unique trust relationship between Native people and the government. They also provide resources and opportunities for individuals and organizations to contribute to their mission of enhancing and promoting the cultural, economic, and political voice of the Alaska Native community.
