HistoryOur mission is to advance the independence for children and adults with a spectrum of abilities and disabilities. For 65 years Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers (f/k/a United Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Florida or UCP) has advocated for inclusion and opportunity for individuals of all ages, ethnicities, and gender, with developmental disabilities. Since 1953, we have successfully developed and implemented cutting-edge educational and therapeutic programs and services for children/students in our community who are primarily on Medicaid, low income, and have significant physical, medical, and cognitive disabilities. In 2017 nearly 2,000 infants, children, youth, and adults with and without developmental disabilities (autism, autism spectrum, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, etc.) and their families were assisted in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties through Capstone's many programs.SpecialtiesCapstone Pet Place is a pet supply store unlike any other. Owned by a local non-profit and funded by Pensacola Bay Area Impact 100, this store serves as an invaluable training center that employs individuals with special needs to do more and be more. Learning the ropes of retail operation, our students participate in many activities to overcome barriers that will help benefit their chances of finding meaningful employment in their community. Some of these activities include training in personal care, resume writing, computer skills, counting inventory, socialization, customer service, mock interviews, and team building exercises. Once students show proficiency in all aspects of their on the site job training, will they then work closely with Managers as a Retail Associate to host pet adoption events with local animal shelters, contact experts to present topics regarding pet health and safety, and assist customers with questions about the many unique and all natural pet products available in store.
