Jefferson County Department of Health, located in Birmingham, Ala., is a full-service public health care center. Formerly known as Alabama Department of Health, it has been operational for more than 55 years. The department offers a wide variety of adult and children health services, and general medical practices, including free pap tests and breast examinations, breast and cervical cancer control programs, blood pressure screening, diabetes education classes, nutrition counseling, and flu shots and other immunizations. It also offers developmental screenings, laboratory tests for sickle cell anemia and lead poisoning, physical examinations, child services coordination, and evaluations with follow-up therapies. The department provides online information and resources for teenagers, and their parents, prostate cancer, depression, breastfeeding, family planning, and HIV and AIDS. Its special programs include car seat instructions, pedometers sales, postpartum home visits, public health emergency preparedness, worksite wellness and maternal care coordination services
