The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation provides health care-related services to improve the condition of people with mental health disorders. Its office is located in Montgomery, Ala. The department also provides services to individuals suffering from substance abuse and serves more than 4,000 individuals annually in the state-operated facilities. Its division of mental illness provides a wide range of health care and support services to such individuals through various state-operated mental health treatment facilities and community mental health centers, such as Bryce Hospital, Greil Memorial Psychiatric Hospital and North Alabama Regional Hospital. The Greil Memorial Psychiatric Hospital has a staff of professional psychiatrics to provide psychiatric evaluation and assessments and case management services. Additionally, its division of mental retardation provides support and referral services to individuals with mental retardation and their families.
