The Alabama Medical Education Consortium (AMEC) is a non-profit organization established in 2005 with the aim of creating a physician manpower pipeline for rural and underserved areas of Alabama. Initially focused on community-based medical education for third and fourth-year medical students, AMEC has now transitioned to supporting the development of up to twelve new hospital residency programs throughout the state.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Wil E. Baker, AMEC has successfully increased the number of physicians practicing in Alabama and provided more opportunities for medical students to train in the state. With funding from the Alabama Legislature, AMEC is dedicated to expanding its mission of establishing a primary care physician pipeline for rural and underserved Alabama.
