The American Legion, founded in 1919, is one of the largest nonprofit community service organizations in the world. It has more than 3 million members and provides support services to military personnel, veterans and their families. The various member benefits and services offered by the organization include career assistance, financial guidance, travel discounts and medical aid. The American Legion sponsors American Legion Baseball, Junior Shooting Sports, the National Oratorical Contest and scouting programs. The organization also publishes political articles, magazines and research papers. Its program, American Legion Riders, raises funds for hospitals, veteran relief organizations, and women and children centers. The American Legion Riders also teaches motorcycle riding and encourages driver safety in communities and schools in cooperation with other national motorcycling organizations.
