Visit the Old Charlotte County Gaol, which from 1832 - 1979 held innumerable prisoners convicted of everything from debt and drunkenness to murder. The original downstairs corridor still evokes a dramatic past through its chilly granite walls and tight cells. In summer months, we offer guided tours of the gaol as well as the neighboring Charlotte County Courthouse, a much grander space of 19th century justice. 2024 opening hours are: June and September: Tuesday - Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm July and August: Monday - Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm Guided tours are offered at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, as well as 3:30 pm in July and August. The Gaol also houses the Charlotte County Archives, the region's pre-eminent collection of documentary heritage. Researchers are welcome year-round, though we request that you make appointments by contacting us in advance. More details on the Archives are available on our website.
